Have you ever thought about how your cultura shapes who you are—and how you can use it to empower others? Growing up in a close-knit familia taught me lessons that continue to guide my life and work today. Let’s explore how these cultural foundations can inspire and uplift the next generation.
I was born to young parents—just 18 and 20—with a combined annual income of $6,000. Despite our modest beginnings, I never felt like we lacked anything. My childhood was filled with love, support, and a strong sense of community.
My early education began at the San Antonio Community College Child Development Program, where I attended alongside my cousins while our parents pursued higher education. Later, I attended elementary school near my grandmother’s house, where my love for reading blossomed. Field trips to places like the San Antonio Zoo and the Symphony sparked my curiosity about culture and storytelling—concepts that would later define much of my life’s work.
Growing up in a big familia taught me invaluable lessons rooted in our cultura. These lessons shaped who I am and how I view success:
These values became my foundation, but life wasn’t without its challenges. My parents divorced during my elementary years, introducing me to the complexities of being a child of divorce—navigating two households, dividing possessions, and learning that every story has more than two sides.
These experiences gave me a unique perspective on culture and education, shaping my research and work within the Latina collective. The cultural narratives I grew up with—focused on familia, faith, and funding—mirrored those of many women in my studies. One recurring theme stood out: celebrating pioneering women in our familias who paved the way for others.
This narrative continues to guide me as I work to uplift the next generation of Latinas by sharing knowledge, opening doors, and emphasizing the importance of community over a “figure it out on your own” mindset. Justice Sonia Sotomayor once said: “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” That ember represents strength, resilience, and empowerment—a legacy passed down through generations that we must protect and nurture.
Here are five ways you can use your cultura to empower others:
Culture isn’t just something we inherit—it’s something we pass on intentionally through our actions and stories. What lessons from your culture have shaped who you are today? How do you plan to share them with future generations?
